This project began with a bold ambition: to demolish the existing property in the greenbelt and create a bespoke family home from the ground up. Working closely with the local planning authority, we were able to unlock the full potential of the site and secure planning permission on the first application, a fantastic result for our delighted clients.
Set on a beautiful plot on the edge of Harpenden, the design was always going to celebrate its surroundings. Framed by countryside and overlooking a tranquil lake, the setting naturally shaped the architectural response. Expansive picture windows and large sliding patio doors with slim frames draw the landscape into the home, while flush thresholds blur the line between inside and out, creating a seamless connection to the garden and beyond.
The front elevation pairs rustic charm with understated elegance. Brick and flint panels sit comfortably alongside a solid oak porch, offering a nod to the local vernacular architecture. In contrast, the interiors adopt a more open-plan, contemporary approach with clean lines, flowing spaces, and an abundance of natural light throughout.
A second planning application enabled the conversion of the attic into an additional bedroom and shower room, opening up even more spectacular views across the countryside. The result is a generous, light-filled home that flows effortlessly from one space to the next, a modern, flexible environment designed to grow with the needs of the family.
